Hypocrisy is real in drag racing!
/If you follow my personal social media you will see that I made a vague post about this a couple of days ago and was asked what exactly I meant when I said it, or what triggered what I said.
We have all at some point in our lives been a hypocrite regarding something, that I will be the first to admit. What I have seen over the years and how much worse it has gotten more recently is something that needs to be said though. So if you are too sensitive, you may want to leave now.
I have found as a sports fan that is approaching 50 years old, and someone that has been involved with drag racing, street racing, cruising, and car shows for over 35 years now, there seems to be this entitlement. It can be almost amusing at times when I scroll the internet and people are being shunned and shamed because they have an opinion that they feel they want to say on a public social media platform.
Week after week, month after month, year after year, I see and have been a part of the Monday morning Quarterback club if you will. Whether that be in MLB, NASCAR, NFL, NBA, etc. Whereas I voice an opinion regarding what happened in a game, what a player did, what an owner did, or what an organization is doing. Then again, show me a true fan that hasn’t done this!
There is only one problem…when it comes to drag racing, apparently you aren’t supposed to have an opinion regarding the happenings in drag racing. You aren’t supposed to call an owner, a driver, a track, a promoter, or god forbid…an organization out (NHRA). People will jump on you like you are the worst thing to exist and that you are the reason that tracks are closing and why we don’t have huge crowds anymore. Newsflash…that’s absolute bullshit!
All the people that are quick to jump your ass about having an opinion, not stated facts, are the same ones that think they can do a better job than their favorite athletes on any given day. These are the same fans of stick and ball sports that think they have the answer to their team losing five games in a row. But damn…if you criticize anything in drag racing you become a pariah.
Have you ever noticed that having an opinion, whether it is one that the masses agree on or not, has never affected your sports teams ability to win. You opinion doesn’t help a team score. Your opinion about a racer doesn’t help them cut a better light or create more boost.
I honestly wish that people stopped acting like having an opinion, even if it is not complimentary of something, was going to destroy our sport. Fact of the matter is that this bullshit sunshine and rainbows that other media outlets within motorsports try to blow up your ass is just that…bullshit. This sport that we love is not all sunshine and rainbows! There are stupid moves made by teams, by tracks, by promoters, by racers, by media, and by fans. It may not happen all the time, by why is it that when it does happen we shouldn’t have a dissenting opinion regarding it?
Stop for a moment and think about this…if you have an opinion, which most people do, don’t you think that for good or bad you have the right to voice it? Look at the amount of fans that some sports analysts have, and their entire job is to have an opinion, whether you like said opinion or not. So stop sitting on your throne acting like we are destroying drag racing by not all herding like sheep. Being honest is how we hold accountability as well. I have been known to call out drivers, track owners, promoters, and especially organizations when they screw up, and from time to time, they’ll call me to discuss my thoughts on something and we have a discussion about it. Other times, they have been known to blackball from covering their events in a capacity in which my job requires because they can’t handle criticism.
Personally, I encourage everyone to have an opinion and voice your opinion if you feel the need to. Doesn’t mean that we have to agree on your opinion or my opinion, but there is also a chance that it starts dialog. So instead of trying to scream from your hypocritical high horse when someone has an opinion, how about you look at yourself and ask if you’ve done the same things regarding other sports.
And yes…this is all just my opinion, of which if you don’t like it I don’t particularly care. Thank you.
