World Cup rolls into Maryland this week!

There are few races on the schedule every year that cause as much discussion and anticipation as the one held every November at Maryland International Raceway. It is best known in the drag racing world as "World Cup".

For those that have never attended World Cup, let me tell you what you are missing out on. Long ago in a galaxy far away we used to have drag racing events that were actually events. The first one that comes to mind as a Ford guy was World Ford Challenge. There was something for everyone if you were a Ford lover. It seems long ago that promoters got away from the show aspect and just decided that racing was all that is needed. The Miller family didn't take the bait though.

For more than 20 years the Miller family has put on World Cup. A coming together of domestic muscle and high revving small engine import cars competing against each other. This isn't just a show up and race event though. This is one of the most, if not the most well organized, almost to a fault, door car races in the country. You don't just show up and buy a tech card. Everything is done via pre-entry months before anyone steps on the grounds. On top of that, a minimum ET is required to be proven before you can compete in your class as well. This ensures that you  will have cars that can run a number and are committed to attending the event.

Like I said, this is an event though. This isn't just a race. There is a manufactures midway that stretches for almost a half mile. You also have a car show with some of the hottest rides on the east coast. To top that off, there is a bikini contest that is sure to get the heart pumping. So whether you are there for the fast cars, the show cars, the beautiful ladies, etc. there truly is something for everyone.

Racing at World Cup is legendary as well. Last year we saw the first five (5) second pass on radials, along with 250 mph by the icon Kevin Fiscus. We saw NMRA Champion Carlos Sobrino wrap up the all motor class in his Coyote Stock car (not CS legal at the time). I also had the privilege to be witness to the final event win of the late, great, soft spoken Mustang Mike Modeste. It was only a month later that we would all be missing Mike.

Not to be left out, the imports cars are something to behold. I have never seen so many quick imports at a single race. These aren't your mom's Honda Civic either folks! These are all out engineering marvels. To take these 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders, and even Rotary engines and do what they are doing in nothing short of spectacular. You will bear witness to some of the most insane pieces of automotive machinery you have ever seen when you walk the pits at World Cup.

Will we have any surprise guests this year? Last year we saw drag racing legend and icon Dave Hance on the property in a car. Who will show up this year? Whatever does show up had better be ready to run some insane times as the weather is looking November cool and the Miller Family will have the track set on tractor beam traction.

Fans in the stands, fans in the pits, and beautiful race cars as far as the eye can see. It means that it's World Cup time. Stay tuned all weekend to E3xtreme.com along with our social media platforms for all the amazing action.
